Rhinoplasty | Nose Job Procedures

The term Rhinoplasty means “nose molding”. It refers to a plastic surgery procedure that changes the over all structure of the nose. The change can be made by adding or removing bone or cartilage, grafting tissue from another part of the body, or implanting synthetic material to alter the shape of the nose.

A consultation with Dr. Felix Bopp is required before proceeding. He will evaluate your nose, both internally and externally, while preforming an overall assessment of the entire face. Your skin type, ethnic background, age and other facial structures are all important factors that can influence the outcome of your surgery.

What is the Purpose of Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is most often performed for cosmetic reasons. A nose that is too large, crooked, or misshapen can be given a more pleasing appearance. If breathing is impaired due to the form of the nose or to an injury, it can often be improved with rhinoplasty.

Before the surgery:

Once you decide Rhinoplasty is right for you, a pre-op appointment will need to be made. It is normally scheduled 2 weeks prior to your surgery date. This is an important visit with the doctor. All of your questions will be answered, written instructions will be given, consents will be signed, photographs will be taken, prescriptions will be written, payment will be made, and most importantly, the final plans will be drawn out for your new nose.

Two weeks prior to your surgery:

  • You need to discontinue the use of Aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as Aleve and Motrin.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages for 72 hours prior to surgery.
  • You may begin taking 3000 mg. of Vitamin C as tolerated per day. It should be divided into 3 doses and taken with food for easier digestion and absorption.
  • Your prescription medication should be filled and started the day prior to your surgery.

What Happens During Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Cosmetic or functional surgery of the nose usually takes between 1 ½ – 3 hours and will be done under general anesthesia at a same day surgery facility. The majority of the incisions are made inside the nose where they are invisible. In some cases, an external incision is made in the columella (the area of the skin separating the nostrils). This will leave a very thin line scar that is barely visible from underneath the nose. Dr. Bopp does not pack the nose after a Rhinoplasty; he prefers to insert splints inside each nostril that support the septum (the dividing wall between the nostrils) as it heals. A firm cast is placed on the outside of the nose at the end of the surgery to give external support and to help the nose retain the new shape during the healing process. A piece of gauze is placed below the nose to help with drainage during the first day or two.

You will be released from the same day surgery facility as soon as you are able to perform certain tasks required by the anesthesiologist and Dr. Bopp. You will need someone to drive you to and from your procedure. You are not permitted to drive immediately following anesthesia or while taking pain medication. Once released from the unit, you should go directly home and rest. You will be drowsy the first few hours due to the after effects of the anesthesia.

What Should Patients Expect in Terms of Recovery?

Your face will feel puffy and swollen, especially the first day after a Rhinoplasty. You may have bruising around your eyes as well. During the first 24 hours, cold compresses to the eye area may reduce the bruising, swelling and discomfort. Always remember to keep external sutures dry. The swelling and splints will make breathing through the nose very difficult initially. Pain medication will most likely be need during the first few days after your procedure. Keeping the head elevated at about a 45 degree angle while resting or sleeping will help with swelling. A recliner is a perfect place to recover the first few days. You are advised not to blow your nose for the first few weeks. Approximately 7 days after your procedure at your 1st post-operative visit, the cast will be removed as well as any external sutures; then 10 days post-operatively the splints will be removed.

It is crucial that you follow Dr. Bopp’s instructions in order to achieve the best result from your Rhinoplasty. Some of your activities such as exercise, heavy lifting, and sun exposure will be prohibited or limited in the weeks following your surgery. Specific instructions will be given to you depending on the precise details of your particular case. Everyone is different and Dr. Bopp will personalize your particular needs throughout this entire process; from initial consult, to final result. You must remember, it will take a few months for all of the swelling to subside, healing to take place and your end result achieved.
