What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that restores your skin by triggering tissue repair and collagen production.  During a microneedling treatment, your aesthetician makes tiny pinpricks on your skin. These mild injuries to your face prompt your body to produce healthy, new tissue in the area. This tissue is high in collagen, a protein that increases your skin’s firmness and tone, and improves its texture.

What skin conditions can microneedling correct?

Sometimes referred to as collagen induction therapy, microneedling can correct several facial complaints, including:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Reduced elasticity
  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

While the procedure is typically performed on your face, it can also treat stretch marks on the thighs and abdomen when combined with other treatments like dermal fillers.

What can I expect during my microneedling treatment?

Your provider at Bopp Dermatology & Facial Plastic Surgery can perform microneedling using a handheld instrument. Before your procedure begins, your doctor applies a topical anesthetic to your skin to eliminate any discomfort. The pinpricks created during microneedling are so small, they aren’t visible following your treatment.

During your treatment, your provider moves the instrument evenly across your skin to ensure consistent tissue rejuvenation. The microneedling procedure takes approximately 30 minutes, but you may have to stay at Bopp Dermatology & Facial Plastic Surgery for longer depending on the medications or serums applied to your skin before and after your treatment.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is often part of microneedling treatments today, depending on your needs and goals. PRP is extracted from your own blood. After a simple blood draw, your Bopp Dermatology & Facial Plastic Surgery provider uses a centrifuge to separate regenerative platelets from the rest of your blood. Those platelets help with skin repair and rejuvenation, accelerating and enhancing the process to give your microneedling even better results.

What can I expect following my microneedling treatment?

Microneedling doesn’t require downtime, though you might notice mild skin irritation or redness for a few days following your appointment. This is your body’s natural response to the minimal damage done to stimulate healing.  Your skin is also more sensitive while it heals after microneedling, so your provider provides additional instructions for sun protection and cleansing to reduce further irritation during this time. The results of microneedling appear within a few weeks to 6 months after treatment.  For optimal results, your provider might recommend multiple treatments or a combination of skin rejuvenation therapies.

If you’d like to discuss microneedling as a way to improve your skin’s appearance, call Bopp Dermatology & Facial Plastic Surgery or schedule a consultation online today.
