Vaginal Rejuvenation Q & A

Bopp Dermatology & Facial Plastic Surgery

What is vaginal atrophy and laxity?

Vaginal laxity develops when tissues inside the vagina become permanently stretched. This condition is caused by vaginal delivery, aging muscles that lose tone, and medical conditions.

Vaginal atrophy is a condition caused by low estrogen – it’s one of the most common issues faced by women during and after menopause. Without sufficient estrogen, vaginal tissues produce less collagen, which leads to poor tone and laxity. The vaginal wall also gets thinner, drier, and often becomes inflamed.

The overall result of low estrogen is deterioration of vaginal tissues, causing symptoms that significantly impact women, such as:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal burning and itching
  • Painful intercourse
  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Less lubrication during intercourse
  • Painful or frequent urination
  • Urinary incontinence

What is vaginal rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation can be achieved with several procedures that restore your vagina to the healthy state that existed before you stopped producing estrogen. Though surgery can tighten vaginal walls, you don’t need surgery because Dr. Barbara Bopp offers vaginal rejuvenation with advanced treatment delivered by the diVa laser.

How does the diVa® laser rejuvenate vaginal health?

The diVa uses cutting-edge hybrid fractional laser technology that allows Dr. Barbara Bopp to customize your treatments. The diVa device is gently inserted into your vagina, then the laser is activated. Heat from the laser triggers collagen production, which strengthens tissues and improves tone in the vaginal wall.

The regenerated tissues are thicker and more elastic, and the vaginal wall regains normal hydration. After treatment, you’ll find that you no longer have symptoms of vaginal atrophy and laxity. Treatment with the diVa can also help improve urinary incontinence.

What can you expect during and after treatment?

Topical numbing cream is applied for 25 minutes prior to the diVa. The diVa procedure only takes three to six minutes to treat the entire vaginal canal. You may feel slight pressure, but you won’t need sedation.

You can return to your usual daily activities when the procedure is finished. However, Dr. Bopp recommends that you avoid sexual intercourse, bath tubs, swimming pools, and Jacuzzis for 48 hours after treatment.

Optimal results are usually achieved when you have three treatments every four weeks. After the initial regimen, one follow-up treatment every 6-12 months will maintain the results.
